tonight, sean and i ventured down to the home depot center again to see the galaxy take on d.c. united in the superliga semi-final. it was not the first time we had gone to a galaxy game, but it was our first chance to see david beckham in person. and as luck would have it, it turned out to be a day of firsts for old golden balls as well. he started for the first time and was even wearing the captain’s armband, which he apparently stole away from landon donovan along with the right to take all freekicks and corners.
and speaking of freekicks, 27 minutes into the game, beckham hammered one into the back of the net sending us all into such a frenzy that we actually high-fived strangers. i’m not sure if it means anything on any grand scale but i got to see david beckham score his first goal in the u.s. and it was a rip. the whole team played better with him out there and although he’s more than earned his salary for the impact he’s had on the league already, it now seems that he’ll also be earning his salary on the pitch in spades. this guy is the real deal and i can’t wait to see him in more home games. here are some pictures i got, including a couple of him lining up the decisive free.
next up: chivas usa on august 23 but beckham and landon donovan will both likely be away on international duty. in other words, we’re cooked.
oh, and the title of this blog comes from when sean and i saw the u.s. national team take on denmark at the home depot center. some american wiseass had that written on a sign. genius.
